I love kiwis and have always associated them as a tropical fruit, but, it turns out they actually originated from China (and are therefore sometimes referred to as Chinese gooseberries). Missionaries brought the kiwi to New Zealand before it brought to the United States. The name kiwi comes from the national bird of New Zealand whose coat resembles the skin of the kiwi.
Four Facts on Kiwi Nutrition:
- Kiwi’s like all citrus and tropical fruits are very high in Vitamin C. In fact 1 small kiwi had 85% of the daily value of Vitamin C.
- A serving of kiwi has more potassium than a banana, which helps maintain electrolyte balance.
- Two kiwis have about 4g of fiber which helps aid in digestion.
- One kiwi contains nearly 40% of the daily value for Vitamin K. Vitamin K may help reduce bone loss, and decrease risk of bone fractures.
Storage: Kiwis will keep for several days at room temperature and up to four weeks in your refrigerator.
